It’s hard to forecast floods in Kazakhstan under availability of 307 hydrological posts- scientist

19.05.2017 Almaty. May 19. KazTAG - Kazhydromet cannot be blamed for inaccurate forecast of floods, said Malik Burlibayev, deputy director general of science and applied ecology.
"Look what is going on, there used to be 506 hydrological posts, now only 307 have left, while according to the recommendations of the international meteorological organization we need to have at least 800. Kazhydromet cannot make forecasts in such conditions," he said at the session dedicated to the floods in Kazakhstan.
He referred to some data characterizing the problems of hydrological forecasts, in 1991-1999 Kazhydromet had to shut down about 33% of meteo stations 65% of hydrological posts, 55% of agro meteorological points and 47% of aerological stations.
"I cannot say now how the meteo stations make snow measuring records, how they can show the height of snow cover to check the water stocks in snow. We cannot rely upon the space filming, as they provide only the area of the snow cover," he said.
According to him, there is no strategic planning in water resources management in Kazakhstan.
