“Today, 265 asylum seekers and 301 refugees live in Kazakhstan. All foreigners who have received asylum on the territory of the republic are provided with protection and support from the state in accordance with Kazakhstan's obligations regarding refugees to the international community,” the report said.
Most refugees live in Almaty and the Almaty region. They have the right to medical and targeted social assistance, labor and entrepreneurial activity without the need to obtain a work permit. Refugee children are also guaranteed the right to free school education.
In addition, refugees can apply for permanent residence and citizenship of Kazakhstan without having to provide certificates of no criminal record from their country of origin.
Kazakhstan joined the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees in 1998 and has since consistently ensured the protection of the rights of this category of foreigners.
