Attorney for human rights: We want to know confinement conditions of activists detained on December 16 in Almaty
Almaty. December 24. KazTAG - We want to know confinement conditions of the activists detained in Almaty on December 16, said Yerlan Kaliyev, attorney for human rights.
"According to the lists that we have received, 26 detainees went on the hunger strike. We are not aware about the reason for this. According to Zhanar Balgabayeva, lawyer, the detainees complained about pressure coming from the employees of the detention facility. Independent observers are not allowed in this object," said Kaliyev.
The attorneys for human rights have addressed to the ombudsman of Kazakhstan.
"We have addressed an emergency message to Azimova (Elvira Azimova, attorney for human rights- KazTAG) asking to send the members of the commission of the National Preventive mechanism. I have been reported today that it was approved. A group of civil activists and attorneys for human rights is waiting for the members of the commission near the building of the detention facility in order to come in, meet the claimants, reveal the reasons for the hunger strike," he added.
"They were illegally detained for going on a peaceful action and expressing their opinion. In fact, independent observers were not allowed in the detention facility when the appeal was considered, while the representatives of NSC, prosecutor's office and other bodies have free access there," he said.
