"Use of bitcoin and other digital currencies is forbidden in all the financial centers and institutions in the state," reads the statement.
The decision was taken late last year as crypto-currency may be used for money laundering and financing of terrorism.
Chief mufti of Egypt Shavki Allam had also ordered to ban bitcoin operations. He said crypto-currency "is forbidden by Islam" as it is associated with "swindle, fraud and barbarism".
