“Yesterday (on August 11) at 6 pm he started [his hunger strike], they are not allowing him to make a phone call. He is demanding either to give him a phone or to transfer him to Almaty,” said his lawyer Galym Nurpeisov.
The journalist may be transferred to either Semipalatinsk or Pavlodar.
“As soon as the verdict comes into force, they will immediately try to take him out. We will start writing an appeal on Monday. We agreed that all lawyers will write an appeal because we need the number,” said Nurpeisov.
On August 2, 2024, Duman Mukhammedkarim was sentenced by the Konayev city court to seven years in prison.
Mukhammedkarim was arrested after protesting against the falsification of the results of the Majilis elections in March 2023. He spent 25 days in custody after declaring his intention to attend a rally in disagreement with the results of the parliamentary elections. On May 1, Mukhammedkarim was detained again. He was then arrested for two months on charges of "financing extremism." On July 15, KazTAG reported that the journalist's health worsened in the pretrial detention center.
