Kazakhstan may need $ 562 billion in additional investment to respond to carbon tax from the EU

Astana. March 4. KazTAG - Over $ 562 billion of additional investments may be needed for Kazakhstan to respond to the introduction of a carbon tax throughout the European Union (EU), said Askar Mamin, Prime Minister.
“The scenario of deep decarbonization, which takes into account significant measures to include new regulated sectors of the economy in the ETS (emissions trading system - KazTAG) and the introduction of a carbon tax in Kazakhstan for unregulated sectors of the economy (will lead to a reduction in GHG emissions (greenhouse gases - KazTAG) up to 80% ). The volume of additional investments is estimated at $ 562.3 billion. These measures will eliminate the carbon tax for Kazakhstani goods by reaching the level of the EU carbon price, ”Mamin said, responding to a request from a group of Majilis deputies regarding the carbon tax on imports.
Parliamentarians in their request indicated that in order to strengthen incentives for a green economy, taking into account the consequences of the pandemic, the EU states are going to introduce a carbon tax on imports from 2022.
“This causes our concern, as more than half of exports from Kazakhstan go to European countries,” said Majilis deputies.
