Meeting of "Norman four" leaders in Astana postponed
Almaty. January 13. KazTAG - The meeting in "Norman format" on the level of Presidents of France, Ukraine, Russia and German Chancellor on resolution of the Ukrainian crisis scheduled on January 15 in Astana has been postponed by several weeks, reports the Unian news agency.
"The meeting scheduled this week has been postponed. Despite the preparatory work between the political directors and Ministers (of Foreign Affairs-KazTAG) there is no agreement about sufficient progress for the meeting organization. It was supposed to be held in "Norman format". It will be postponed by several weeks," said Elmar Brok, chairman of the committee of European Parliament on foreign issues, at the session in Strasburg.
He said "he is not an optimist anymore as there have been no agreements achieved on sufficient number of points which might be significant for the final result".
"Quite often the heads of states get together but fail to reach any results, like it was in Milan," he said.
In his opinion the main condition which must be fulfilled is strengthening of the Ukrainian border.
"We see that there are 7500 Russian soldiers in the East of Ukraine. We see that the main point of the agreement- is to strengthen the border as the situation is turning into a frozen conflict," he added.
According to the Russian mass media sources, the MFA's leaders of "Norman four" will discuss the terms of possible summit in Astana at the new meeting.
"There is understanding that after the meeting of contract group, which, hopefully, will gather one of these days, the Ministers of "Norman four" will meet again and discuss the prospects and terms of possible summit in Astana," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
