Old Kazakhstan dreams of returning through protests – Bapi

Astana. March 20. KazTAG – Old Kazakhstan dreams of returning to power through protest sentiments, said Ermurat Bapi, Majilis deputy.
“We cannot discount the existence of obstacles on the path of historical reforms. We feel how difficult it is for the new government to destroy the old system that has formed over 30 years, to break its back. We cannot say that the opposition from Old Kazakhstan stopped after the January events. The active actions of those who were removed from the budget trough and who dream of getting back to the people's wealth continue. They are now actively taking measures to turn protest sentiments to their advantage,” Bapi said at a meeting of the Majilis.
According to him, we are witnessing how criticism from active citizens on social networks against New Kazakhstan plays into the hands of Old Kazakhstan.
“I have also personally seen how difficult it is to break the connection between the established bureaucratic schemes and the old autocratic regime. I know that my other fellow deputies have also seen this, as they cannot get answers to their requests from those who use the apparatus schemes,” said the parliamentarian.
Speaking about the threats of protests, he called on Kazakhstani society to support the initiated reforms.
“It is no secret that it was not so much the state apparatus that was unprepared for democratic reforms, but society itself, hungry for democracy and suffering from the oppression of the old regime. Evidence of this is the fact that individual active citizens, instead of supporting the reforms, stood in opposition to the updated parliament. Until the government and society are together, the implementation of the idea of New Kazakhstan is impossible. The government cannot change anything without the participation of society itself. In order for the changes to become a national, public and state idea, we need to consolidate and dot all the i’s,” Bapi emphasized.
