Earlier media reported that entering the first round, no candidate for the presidency of Israel gathered a majority of votes from the members of the Knesset (Israel's parliament). The second round was comtinued by two leaders of the first round: the former speaker of the Knesset, a member of the right party "Likud" lead the ruling coalition, Reuven Rivlin, who collected 44 votes, and former interior minister, a member of the center-left party "Ha tnua" ("Motion"), also a member of the ruling coalition, Meir Shitrit, who collected 31 votes.
The current President of Israel is 90-year-old Shimon Peres.
