Sentence for illegal trafficking of saiga horns and sturgeon caviar doubled in Kazakhstan

Astana. November 6. KazTAG - Yerlan Nysanbayev, Vice Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources,  said that the term for illegal trafficking of saiga horns and sturgeon caviar has been doubled in Kazakhstan.
“The Article 339, on which concerns poachers involved in illegal trafficking of saiga derivatives and sturgeon species, has been substantially updated. Illegal trafficking in saiga derivatives and sturgeon species in Kazakhstan will be punishable by up to 12 years in prison. Previously, this type of crime was punishable for up to five years," he said at a press-conference.
In his words, punishment has been tightened for new qualifying signs.
“These are signs such as:  repeated poaching; if the act is committed by a group of persons or a group of persons by prior agreement; if the act is committed in specially protected natural areas; if the act was committed by a person using his official position; a large or especially large amount of damage," he said.
