Serious quakes may occur in border regions of Kazakhstan with Kyrgyzstan- Kyrgyzstan experts
Almaty. May 5. KazTAG - Serious quakes may occur in the border regions of Kazakhstan with Kyrgyzstan in 2014, said Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov, director of seismology institute of national academy of sciences of Kyrgyzstan.
"This year the most probable districts (of quakes-KazTAG) are, first of all, Oshregion, Issyk Kul region, to the north of Ananyevo village, Cholpan-Ata city and even the neighboring districts of Kazakhstan," he said.
His prognosis is based on so called "seismic lull" which usually comes before strong quakes.
"Usually at least 5-6 quite strong quakes occur at the territory of the state. But four months have past and there has been no big event. In my opinion this fact is worrisome, it may mean accumulation of big tectonic tensions, which may result in quite a serious quake," he said.
KazTAG editorial applied to the seismology institute of the National scientific-technological holding "Parasat".
Tanatkan Abakanov, director of seismology institute, said he does not carry responsibility for the words of Kyrgyzstan colleagues, while the institute makes forecast of seismic activity every year.
"We made an official prognosis for the year in January, half a year later we update the data, besides that me make weekly reports," he said.
He refused to give more comments about "seismic lull".
Meanwhile, the editorial did not find the prognosis information on the site of the seismology institute Abakanov had mentioned, while the latest information was dated autumn 2013.
