“The level of poverty has increased in Kazakhstan. Against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the share of the population with incomes below the subsistence level (T32.6 thousand) increased to 5.3%, in 2019 this figure was 4.3%. (…) This trend is observed throughout Kazakhstan against the backdrop of a decrease in economic activity and the consequences of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection pandemic. Thus, the population with incomes below the subsistence level amounted to 1.1 million people, ” reads the report.
The highest poverty level is observed in Turkestan (12.8%), North Kazakhstan (7.4%) and Zhambyl regions (6.9%), the lowest is in Nur-Sultan (1.4%), in Karaganda (2, 4%) and Atyrau (3.1%) regions.
“In two cities of republican significance, Almaty and Shymkent, indicators have deteriorated significantly. In Almaty, the poverty rate was 6.2% (in the second quarter of 2019 - 2.6%), in Shymkent - 6.4% (in the second quarter of 2019 - 3.1%), ” reads the message.
