“The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project has released a report about the use of state-of-the-art spyware to wiretap journalists, politicians and civil activists in more than 10 states, including Kazakhstan. The Adil Soz Foundation and the Union of Journalists of Kazakhstan consider it unacceptable to spy on the activities and personal lives of representatives of the media sphere and wiretap their phones. This is not only a direct violation of Article 18 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but also an attempt to control and restrict freedom of speech, ” said the report.
The Union of Journalists of Kazakhstan and Adil Soz Foundation have demanded to name the journalists who were on the wiretapping list.
“We appeal to the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Parliament, the National Security Committee and the General Prosecutor's Office with the demand: to conduct an objective and as open as possible investigation into this case,” reads the statement.
