US State Department lists over 20 political prisoners in Kazakhstan
Almaty. March 15. KazTAG - The US State Department has listed over 20 political prisoners in Kazakhstan.
"The Open Dialogue fund has approximately 24 people on the list who are considered to be arrested or imprisoned on the base of politically motivated opinions, including "land" activist Maks Bokayev and individuals connected with the opposition group Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan headed by fugitive banker Mukhtar Ablyazov and people associated with him," reads the annual report of the US State Department on human rights.
According to the report, convicted leader of professional union Larisa Kharkova has been restricted in freedom, without having a chance to leave the city without a permit of authorities. Human rights organizations have the access to the prisoners within the frameworks of the National Preventive mechanism against tortures.
"Maks Bokayev was sentenced five years imprisonment in 2016 for organizing peaceful protest actions concerning the land reform. Although the UN working group concluded that his imprisonment was arbitrary, he remained in prison," said the report.
