WHO Director-General convenes emergency committee meeting over monkeypox situation

Astana. August 8. KazTAG – World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that he is convening an emergency committee meeting due to the increase in human cases of monkeypox.
“In view of the spread of monkeypox outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the potential for further spread within and beyond Africa, I have resolved to convene an emergency committee to advise me on whether the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in his letter to the WHO.
The committee will consist of independent experts from around the world.
Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease that is most common in remote areas of Central and West Africa. Symptoms include nausea, fever, rash, itching, and muscle pain.
