About 30 thousand people are in prison in Kazakhstan - Ministry of Internal Affairs

Astana. October 19. KazTAG -  About 30 thousand people in Kazakhstan are in prisons, said Zhanat Eshmagambetov, chairman of the criminal executive system committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“Over the past nine years, the prison population has decreased from 57 000 to 30 000. In the world ranking by the number of prisoners, Kazakhstan has moved from third to 100th place over the past 18 years,” he said.
Thus, approximately 0.2% of the population of Kazakhstan are in prisons.
“Today, there are 82 institutions in the penitentiary system of Kazakhstan, which contain about 30 thousand people: in colonies - about 25 thousand convicts, and over 5000 in 16 pre-trial detention centers," he said.
