Former head of Ministry of Internal Affairs Erlan Turgumbayev detained on case of January events

Astana. April 30. KazTAG – The information portal Nege reports about the detention of former Minister of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan Erlan Turgumbayev on the case of the January events.
“According to our sources, former Minister of Internal Affairs Erlan Turgumbayev was detained. This decision was made by special prosecutors as part of a criminal case opened against Turgumbayev under the article – abuse of power in connection with the tragic events of January 2022,” said the statement.
On March 20 it was reported that the Prosecutor General’s Office interrogated Turgumbayev in the case of the January events.
Turgumbayev headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs from February 2019 and was relieved of his post shortly after the January events - on February 25, 2022. Then for about six months until August 17, 2022, he was an adviser to the president, and from 2013 he worked as an adviser to the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (RATS SCO).
