Water deficit restrains socio-economic development of SCO states

Almaty. June 21. KazTAG - Water deficit restrains sustainable socio-economic development of SCO states reports SCO press-service.
"Almost 6 mln of rivers and lakes are located on the SCO territory, the area of mountain ranges, which are considered as "water towers", is about 12.5 million square meters km, and the total volume of water resources is estimated at almost 10 million cubic kilometers. At first glance, there is enough water for development. At the same time, a certain part of the population continues to experience water stress, and water deficit restrains sustainable socio-economic development," said Rashid Alimov, SCO secretary general at the international conference "Water for sustainable development" in Dushanbe.
He stressed that water problems are among the most pressing problems related to the environment.
"Their sizes become threatening, and as a result they will determine the destinies of all people on our planet. Concern for the conservation and enhancement of water resources is in the interest of everyone," he said.
